Kemp L. Smeal is currently the organist in residence for the Glendale City Seventh-day Adventist Church and La Canada Presbyterian Church. He has performed extensively in the Los Angeles area, including Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, The Crystal Cathedral, First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, Temple Bat Yahm, Stephen S. Wise Temple, and Glendale Presbyterian Church. He has performed in other U.S. cities and Europe and is a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, New Jersey, where he studied with Mark Brombaugh and coached with Joan Lippincott and Eugene Roan. He studied accompanying with Martin Katz; and, later while in the San Francisco Bay Area, studied piano with Scott Fogelsen at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
In line with his academic pursuits, Kemp served as associate professor of accompanying at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa. Kemp is a member of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
Kemp has released his solo piano album compact disc, “Beside Still Waters,” an eclectic work of original hymn arrangements, classical repertoire, and original compositions for piano. Time Life Video features a number of selections from Kemp's CD on the video, A Walk with Jesus: A Holy Land Journey with Hymns and Scriptures. Kemp is the featured organist on the Welsh Choir of Southern California CD, Hearts Afire, playing on the Great Organs of First Congregational Church of Los Angeles, California.
Never a person to limit the range of his skills and interests, Kemp earned a degree in Clinical Psychology at Azusa Pacific University, Azusa, and is a licensed psychotherapist with a private practice in Long Beach, California. He is a clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Kemp has been awarded a listing in Outstanding Young Men in America and a biographical listing in the 2008 (62nd) Edition of Who's Who in America.
Apart from his musical and professional interests, Kemp enjoys coastal living, traveling, reading, concerts, and theater.
